| Batman/Deathblow:
After the Fire |
| Price:
$5.95, 48 pages |
| This
comic, the first in a three-issue Prestige-format
mini-series, features one of comic's hottest writers,
Brian Azzarello, and two stellar artists, Lee Bermejo
on pencils, and Tim Bradstreet on inks, all working
together to create the perfectly dark, surreal look
and feel for this tale of an assassination gone
terribly wrong. A decade ago, Deathblow, an old
Wildstorm afterthought that Azzarello brings a surprising
depth to, embarked upon a task with murderous intent,
but for unknown reasons, doesn't finish his work.
Turns out that during the job, Deathblow's life
was saved by an International Operations agent;
the agent just happened to be an associate of Bruce
Wayne, and when said agent is mysteriously killed,
someone's in line for a beating. Enter the Dark
Knight detective. Batman must uncover the mystery
behind the ten-year-old botched black-ops mission
and bring his friends' killer to justice, and to
do so, it'd be nice if Bats could talk to Michael
Cray (codename Deathblow). The problem with questioning
Cray? He's dead. This beginning chapter of this
mini-series reads quickly and intriguingly, and
fans of Azzarello will immediately recognize his
innate ability to grab the super-interested psyche
of the reader and give it the chokehold. Artists
Bermejo and Bradstreet are at their foreboding best
as well, and if there's a grittier, seedier underbelly
in the DC universe than their dank Gotham City,
then it certainly hasn't been stylistically represented
any better than this. This is easily going to be
considered one of the best mini-series of the year,
so don't miss out on this first issue. |
| Green
Lantern #145 |
| Price:
$5.00 |
| This
issue is garnering a truckload of attention, and
for good reason. While there have been a few fans
who've disliked the current direction of GL under
the pen of Barry Ween scribe Judd Winick, those
notions certainly haven't slowed down the momentum
of what is the beginning of the end of young Kyle
Rayner's tenure as Green Lantern. Fans have been
clamoring for this issue, which sees Kyle fighting
the Qwardian's newest bellboy, Nero. As the yellow
ring-bearer Nero and Kyle are battling, (check out
the great chaotic fight scenes by artist Dale Eaglesham)
the Spectre appears, and as Kyle defeats Nero, Hal
Jordan (the Spectre) offers him a choice: he can
either go back to his life before he yielded the
ring, or become something more than just a superhero-more
than Hal had ever been man enough to become-an omnipotent
being. More than just a good starting point for
new or returning GL readers, this issue showcases
Winick's wonderful capabilities in the area of very
real and touching human interaction; you'll get
duck bumps all over when Hal says to Kyle: "As
to why I have made you aware of these choices
I
only wish someone would have shown me". Now,
with the announced exit of Kyle as the Green Lantern
in issue #150, comic fans the world over are pondering
this question: Who will be the next Green Lantern?
You won't get any help from us
unless you get
in here and buy this fine comic book. |
| Daredevil
#26 |
| Price:
$5.00 |
| Okay,
listen up: remember how good Daredevil was when
Frank Miller was writing it? Yeah-it's that good
again-really-and it's selling like crazy. This issue
features the return of comic's most prolific writer
of late, Mr. Brian Michael Bendis. After collaborating
with the unbelievably talented art phenomenon David
Mack on this title (issues 16-19, fantastic story
arc), Bendis returns with a vengeance and an artist
absolutely perfect for this crime-driven, hard-boiled
book, Alex Maleev. Upon the start of his tenure
on the title, Bendis claimed that Daredevil will
undergo incredulous changes in his life, similar
to Aunt May finding out that Peter Parker just happens
to be none other than the amazing Spider-man, and
ya know what? With a beginning like this, it ain't
too hard to believe what he's saying. This great
book reads a heck of a lot like a Mario Puzo screenplay-in
other words, it's like The Godfather (with a blind
guy in red tights). Within the first few pages,
Bendis successfully introduces a menacing new villain
and dices up DD's old archenemy, the Kingpin with
a butcher knife. Artist Alex Maleev's gritty, detailed
penciling makes this book a sight for sore eyes
with every action-packed, emotional panel-it's no
stretch to say that this is the best work of his
career. Telling you anymore would have The Man Without
Fear slapping us with a lawsuit, so don't take our
word for it-read the book soon! |
| The
Incredible Hulk #34 |
| Price:
$12.50 |
| This
back issue is currently holding the top spot as
far as requests go, and it's not for any other reason
than this: its' really, really, really, really good!
Marvel's been bringing in some top-of-the-line talent,
and here, they cut no corners when inviting former
horror legend Bruce Jones to script The Incredible
Hulk. We pick up the story with a scraggily bald
and confused Dr. Bruce Banner that has been reduced
from an acclaimed and wealthy brilliant scientist
to a fugitive, on the run and shouldering the world's
guiltiest conscious. Banner is easier to relate
to than ever here, and Jones quickly establishes
the fact that Bruce is a survivor, and he expertly
explores the subtleties of Banner's bruised and
forlorn character. John Romita Jr. is simply one
of the best visual storytellers the medium has ever
seen, and in this beautifully sculpted issue, that
fact is cemented. There is absolutely no action-Romita
helps Jones set the table so well that you don't
even notice the lack of chaos that ensues during
the Hulk's adventures-you just read the last page,
turn the book over, and read it again. All of the
following issues released after this one sold out,
and with each new book: another sell out. This stuff
is good folks, and if you've never read an issue
of The Incredible Hulk, this is THE ONE to start
out with. And if you've been reading it, then you
probably won't have to pay more than ten bucks for
a copy. However, for those of you who don't want
to break the bank on ol' Greenskin, Marvel has reprinted
issues 34, 35, and 36 in one volume for just $3.99.
Whatever way you choose to read this fantastic new
direction for the Hulk: enjoy! |

| The
Ultimates #1 |
| Price:
$2.25 |
| Beginning
to thing just about anything with the words "Ultimate
Marvel" stamped on it will sell better than
lite and tasty Subway sandwiches to Jered? Well,
if you aren't thinking that, you should start. Right
now. The hype for this book about the Avengers set
in the Ultimate universe was unbelievable after
the phenomenal success of the other Ultimate comic
lines-people were calling weeks in advance to reserve
copies so they didn't miss out on the next big hit
from "The House of Ideas". This one exceeds
all that hype and more. Mark Millar's conceptual
character ideas are tantalizing, and his Captain
America is a gritty, tough-as-nails leatherneck
leader who quietly earns respect from his fellow
men-in-arms without prancing around in spandex with
his big shiny shield. The first installment of The
Ultimates is illustrated brilliantly by Brian Hitch
(of Authority and JLA fame), and his superior talents,
along with great inking and coloring, make this
the best looking book to emerge from the Ultimate
line. There is absolutely no good reason why you
should not own this comic book. And, since The Ultimates
#2 is all set to ship on February 27, you can pick
'em both up right here at All About Books and Comics. |

| Stray
Bullets #23 |
| Price:
$3.50 |
| Writer/Artist
David Laphams' cult phenomenon series makes its
comeback following his fantastic work on the nine
issue, twisted noir-ish Murder Me Dead saga, and
man, is his return remarkable. Everything you love
about Lapham's darkly humorous plot twists and his
"you-know-this-$#%&-happens-but-nobody-talks-about-it"
outlook is epitomized right here in the newest issue
of Stray Bullets. Stray Bullets is the intricate
and intriguing ongoing stories of several people
who are interwoven in each other's lives by strange
and normally unfortunate happenstances. David Lapham's
incredible insight into the realm of the unspoken
and (sometimes unheard of) insane meanderings of
the human mind is a downright guilty pleasure for
it's readers, and the series is excellent as well
for fans of murder mystery/crime noir/slice-of-life/dark
humor books. Watch out, though-this comic isn't
for everyone, but open-minded mature readers will

| Elektra
& Wolverine: The Redeemer #1 |
| Price:
$5.95 |
| Hot
on the heels of the launch of ELEKTRA and the smash
hit ORIGIN mini-series, LEKTRA & WOLVERINE:
THE REDEEMER pairs text by crime novelist Greg Rucka
with dozens of fully-painted illustrations by world-
renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano in a self-contained
tale of suspense. THE STORY: A paid killer. A key
witness. A sworn protector. Three lives joined together
by the sinister hand of a shadowy government. Elektra,
the deadly ninja assassin, and Logan, the mutant
known as Wolverine, are both best at what they do.
But they just may have met their match in the other,
as the two supremely skilled fighters face off in
the streets of New York over the fate of a teenaged
girl harboring a secret for which both sides are
willing to kill. For the mercenary and enigmatic
assassin Elektra Natchios, it was to be a standard
night's work: to make death happen. The target:
a wealthy and powerful scientist. The price: eight
million dollars for a clean hit - no witnesses.
When the target's teenaged daughter Avery stumbles
onto the murder at the critical moment, Elektra
knows the girl must be taken out at all costs. But
for the assassin still haunted by the pain of seeing
her own father's death, taking out a girl eerily
reminiscent of herself proves to be more difficult
than expected - especially after Wolverine is hired
to protect the key witness. |
